My Journey into Leica...

A path not to be taken lightly, not without reservations, and not without dedication, but the results can be sweet, OH SO SWEET!  This is a documentation of my trials and tribulations into the world of Leica Rangefinder Photography, and I hope you'll enjoy coming along with me.

Disneyland, with 90mm Elmarit...

I had an idea to use only 1 lens each time I revisit Disneyland to see how each focal length affect my shots.  Today, I brought only the 90mm Elmarit.  The telephoto lens forced tight crops so I had to be extra careful with my framing.

I used f/4 almost the entire day, concentrating on a single subject and ended up with mostly portraits and not so much environmental/streets.  No surprises there.

It felt very different from using solely the 35'Cron the last time.  Shooting streets, it was very nice to be able to hang back and frame to get the shot with less worries about being noticed.  Kind of felt like a sniper ;-)

Here are some samples, the rest can be found in the personal gallery [HERE].

Moments from the library...

Like any good father should, I have begun exposing my son to the world of the galaxy far, far away.  Yesterday, we went to the library to look for Star Wars books so I can read them for his bedtime stories.  There are actually some nicely done comics that captured the essence of the stories, which allowed him to just look at the pictures on his own, while I snapped some shots.  The almost dark ambiance of the library made it a little challenging for the 90mm Elmarit-M, so I had to turn up the ISO to 1250.  Perhaps a 90mm Summicron is in my future, but I think it's a bit more bulky... in fact, I was rather thinking about the 90mm Macro-Elmar which has a maximum aperture of f/4.  Size and speed are always a trade-off... but so far the Elmarit seems to be a good balance.  Here are a few more shots:

Disneyland, with 35'Cron...

As Disneyland annual ticket holders, it would be a waste if we don't go there at least once a month.  Since we live about 10 miles from it, we can take our son there on a whim and explore the parks piece by piece.  Today, we visited the California Adventure theme park, which just last summer, opened the newest attraction: Radiator Springs, from the Pixar movie "Cars".

If you're not familiar, in the movie, the town is situated in a Grand Canyon like setting bisected by Route 66.  The "Cars Land", besides being a life-size replica of the town, also has recreated some of the awesome canyons and buttes.  I never knew fake nature can look so beautiful.

I didn't want to carry a full 3-lens (28-50-90) lineup like last time, so I just mounted the 35'Cron and stuffed the 90'Elmarit in my coat pocket, just in case.  Keeping true from my ideas of self-discipline from the last post, I ended up not using the 90mm at all.  I think it would be an interesting experiment if from now on, each time I go back to Disneyland, I would use only one lens, and then compare and see how the shots changes.  So, let's this be the first of many... and I've titled this post accordingly.

As usual, the full set of images can be viewed from my personal gallery for the year 2013 [HERE].

Lenses... options or distractions?

Every once in a while, someone will ask for others' opinions about what lenses they should keep/get for their M-cameras.  I remember a funny saying (pardon my language): "Opinions are like assholes, everyone's got one."  Everyone will try to pitch in with good intentions, but you end up with wide variety of answers.  Ultimately, the best answer can only be answered by the person who asked because you should always do what makes you happy.

It's got me thinking, though.  I started out with only a 50mm lens and I was happy.  I concentrated on the content and I learned to know my lens really well.  Of course, there were time I wished I could go wider or longer, but only seldomly.

Happy New Year, 2013

Here comes 2013... along with a new year, usually comes with the feeling of hope, enthusiasm, and renewed resolve.  Some people suggested a one-camera-one-lens experiment, but I don't think that makes much sense, nor do I have the will power to sustain it.  I figure I will just continue to shoot, learn, and repeat.  To kick off the new year, here are some shots to share.  A couple from my wife's birthday, and a few from walking around the block.
